Lesson 2: Self-Introduction 自己紹介
Culture Note Self-Introduction Vocabulary Dialogue 1 Dialogue 3 Grammar
Culture Note:
Yakuza do not only speak in a rude and intimidating manner. As a member of a hierarchically-structured gang, it is important to know one's place within the organization and speak appropriately politely to superiors. In this lesson we will learn how to introduce ourselves to a higher-ranking (目上) gang member or member of an outside gang.

Self-Introduction 自己紹介:
The yakuza self-introduction is done in a theatrical manner, with one arm outstretched and the palm facing the speaker, the other arm behind the back, and the torso slightly bowed. The pronunciation is also exaggerated, with vowels stretched out and sounds like マシ slurred into "mash." Be sure to memorize the lines in the correct order.

Grammar Notes:
1. Verb Stem + やがる
Verb stem (the -masu form minus masu) + やがる turns a verb into a very strong form equivalent to "fucking + verb."
In this example 「てめえみたいな三下よこしやがって」means "He (aniki) fucking sent an underling like you," as 寄越す(よこす) means "to send."
Conjugations:
-
飲む becomes 飲みやがる
-
食べる becomes 食べやがる
-
Irregular: 来る becomes きやがる or こやがる、する becomes しやがる
Verb Stem + やがる is used to criticize someone's actions, or to display one's own negative feelings.
Try to translate the following sentences into Japanese using : Verb Stem + やがる
1. It's fucking raining again.
2. That asshole fucking stole my bike!
